Holi is the colorful festival of Hindu’s. Holi celebrated on Phalgun Purnima which comes in February or early of March in 2009 it is on March 11.
The colorful festival bridges the social gap and renews sweet relationships, on this day, people enjoying hug and wish each other ‘Happy Holee’.
The most common story behind the Holi Celebration is “Holika and Prahlaad”
The Legend of Holika and Prahlad
There was a king name of “Hiranyakashyap” who won over the kingdom of hole earth. He was so egoistic that he commanded everybody in his kingdom to worship only him, but to his great disappointment, his son “Prahlad” became an ardent devotee of Lord “Vishnu” and refused to worship Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap tried several ways to kill his son Prahlad but Lord Vishnu saved him every time. Finally, he asked his sister, “Holika” to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap. For, Hiranyakashyap knew that Holika had a boon, whereby, she could enter the fire unscathed.
Treacherously, Holika coaxed young Prahlad to sit in her lap and she herself took her seat in a blazing fire, the legend has it that Holika had to pay the price of her sinister desire by her life. Holika was not aware that the boon worked only when she entered the fire alone.
Prahlad, who kept chanting the name of Lord Naarayana all this while, came out unharmed, as the lord blessed him for his extreme devotion.
Thus, Holi derives its name from Holika and, is celebrated as a festival of victory of good over evil.
Holi is also celebrated as the triumph of a devotee. As the legend depicts that anybody, howsoever strong, cannot harm a true devotee. And, those who dare torture a true devotee of god shall be reduced to ashes.
Truth behind the Holi
Holi is festival of colors. Peoples coloring each other by cosmetic and liquid colors and wasting lots of water to remove that. Every year on Holi millions of water wasted.
Every day we use water without a thought. Holi is a good reminder to curb water wastage during the festival of colours.
Tips to save water on Holi
- Measure the quantity of water you want to use to play with and store it. Stick to that limit. Resist the temptation of going overboard.
- Play with dry and natural colors they wash off easily.
- Avoid playing with water balloons.
- Go for a bath only when you are done. Bathing again and again is sure water wastage.
- Play in a separate area or the garden. Getting the whole house dirty will simply lead to more water usage.
- Wear old dark coloured clothes, so cleaning them does not need too much water and effort.
- Apply oil on your hair before stepping out to play. This will provide a protective coating over your hair. Even if you do end up getting colour in your tresses, a single wash can be enough to make your hair colour-free.
- Shield yourself with some moisturising lotion to prevent your skin from staining. It will keep your skin hydrated and prevent it from harmful effects of colour.
- Coat your nails with nail paint. It is the most basic form of nail care and can go a long away in keeping your nails from soiling with colours. Your nails will stay clean just like before playing Holi.
- In case you forget to apply a body lotion and you have colour all over you then do not step under the shower immediately. Rub some coconut oil or cream and let the colour start fading. Now a quick wash will make you clean without much scrubbing. You will save water too.
- If you are playing indoors or on the terrace, spread a tarpaulin on the floor. Once you have finished playing, you can simply wash away the colours on the tarpaulin and save using detergents on the floor.
