History Of Mahabaleshwar Hill Station

The origin of the world Mahabaleshwar comes from the term Mamleshwar, which means Lord Shiva. In the year 1215, King Singhan of Deogiri visited Old Mahabaleshwar. He built a small temple and water tank at the source of the river Krishna. Around 1350, a Brahmin dynasty ruled this area. In the middle of the 16th century, the Maratha family of Chandarao More defeated the Brahmin dynasty and became rulers of Mahabaleshwar, In the 17th century, Shivaji Maharaj took over Mahabaleshwar and built Pratapgarh Fort in 1656. The Hemadripant Temples were constructed and named after his Wazir called Hemadripant. Hemadripant played a crucial role in establishing the Mahabaleshwar Temple for the Mahadev Koli tribes.

From the 17th century, many rulers and kings from Hindu and Muslim reigned Mahabaleshwar. Many years Mahabaleshwar is known for situating near the source of rivers like Krishna, Koyna, Gayatri, Vienna, and Savitri. From the year 1829 to 1831, Mahabaleshwar came into existence.

  • Pratapgad: This place is famous for the Battle of Pratapgad and was established in 1656, which is situated in the Satara district. Now this place has a magnificent Partapgad fort in it which has 17 foot long Shivaji statue.
  • Venna Lake: This is the main tourist attraction of Mahabaleshwar, there you can do boating and horse riding. This lake was constructed by the raja of Satara, Shri Appasaheb Maharaj in the year 1942.

  • Lingmala Waterfall: This is the most jaw-dropping scenery with the waterfalls in a cascading manner. This waterfall meets in the Venna valley. From long-distance, this waterfall appears silver in color, which is worth watching by the tourists.
  • Marpo Garden: This garden is situated in the Panchgani which is nearer to Mahabaleshwar. Marpo garden is worldwide famous for delicious strawberry production.
  • Wilson Point: This place offers a panoramic view of both sunset and sunrise. This place is located at the height of 4710 ft above sea level.

  • Marjorie Point: This place is so amazing itself because when you stand at this place, all the tree forts that are Makrandgad, Tornagad, and Pratapagad can be viewed from this point at a time. This spot will give you a delightful and magnificent view of the Sahyadri range.
  • Arthur’s Seat: It is located at the Northwest of Mahabaleshwar, which gives a lofty overlook.  Its name is derived from Mr Arthur Mallet’s initials which had initially built the first house here. The valley of Jor and the Savitri River can be seen from Arthur’s seat.
  • Elephant’s Head Point: Marvelous observation of point offering elevated mountain views.
  • Dhobi Waterfall: This is a large waterfall covered with a soulful environment.

Modes Of Reaching Mahabaleshwar Hill Station

The weather in Mahabaleshwar remains pleasant throughout the year, making it one of the most explored after leisure destinations for weekends. The best time to visit Mahabaleshwar is between October to June.

By Airways:

The nearest airport to Mahabaleshwar is the Pune airport which is present at a distance of 120 km. Though there is no airport current at Mahabaleshwar. Several Airplane companies including Air India, SpiceJet, GoAir and IndiGo, operate regular flights for Pune from Indian cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Nagpur. From there you can take a cab or auto for further travelling.

By Railways:

Mahabaleshwar Hill Station doesn’t have a station of its own. Wathar Railway station is stationed at a distance of 60 km from Mahabaleshwar. One can also reach the Pune railway station to reach Mahabaleshwar. Another option is Pune railway station, which enjoys excellent connectivity with the rest of the country.

By Roadways:

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation provides regular bus services from nearby cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Panchgani, Satara and Kolhapur to Mahabaleshwar. Those who are driving from Mumbai can take Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH 4 route to reach Mahabaleshwar.
