Have you been to Hyderabad? If you have been, you surely would have visited the Golconda fort that is located in the western part of the city. The name Golconda literally means “Shepherd’s Hill”. When you visit the city of Nizams, don’t forget to take your time and visit the Golconda Fort.

Know the historical significance of the Fort

As a part of the defense, the Kakatiya dynasty built a fortification wall and citadel around the granite hilltop which is known as the Golconda fort. At the start, the fort was built up of mud which later during g the reign of the Qutb Shahi dynasty was modified. Why was the need to safeguard Golconda arose is the question many still don’t know…The place was rich in both above and below the soil!

The diamond mines in the vicinity produced some rare and precious diamonds that was later taken to various part of the globe during the war of Independence, one such to name is the precious Koh-i-Noor which is now owned by the United States!
Golconda was first known as Mankal, during the Kakatiya rule.

The prosperity of the Golconda Fort

The Golconda Fort was house to many rare and precious diamonds. The diamond mines of Kollur was the land that produced the most sought highly desirable diamonds in the world. The best part is that Kollur Mines were the only known mines in the entire world at that time. The great African mines too weren’t discovered at that point in time. The Fort had the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond, the beautiful Hope diamond, stored and safeguarded along with other precious. The land soon becomes the richest place and the diamond trade of the country.

However, it was not only the diamond trade that pulled people all over the world to this little fortified walls. In the early 17th century a giant cotton making industry was standing strong in Golconda. Beautiful cotton was produced and exported to many lands. The local consumption of the product too existed. The colors for the fabrics were manmade and pure from vegetables and fruits, unlike the chemicals that are used today.

Golconda Fort- The pride of Hyderabad

Tourists across the country and globe love to visit Hyderabad. The city is known for its historic past and modern future! The most sought places in Hyderabad remain Ramuji Film city, Falaknuma Palace, Charminar Gate, and the Golconda Fort.

Golconda Fort is located in the western part of Hyderabad. Tourists gather here looking for the traces of the past through which the fort has stood against the time. The fort has witnessed powerful rulings, prosperity, and the ruins later when it falls under the regime of the Mughal emperor Aurangabad! The timings to visit the place for the tour is strictly between 9:30 to 5:30 in the evening. If you have booked for night light and show, you are permitted to stay back. People enjoy the sunset from the highest point of the hill and get mesmerized by the beauty.

Tourists’ peak months are around September to March. Try to avoid a trip during the summer as Hyderabad tends to rise above 40 degrees during that time. Travelers, need to be prepared for excessive footwork as there is no other option than to walk around the magnificent fort and climb up and down the stairs several times.

It is quite easy to reach Golconda Fort, one can easily avail cab from the airport or railway station directly to the fort. Or take rest for a day in some good accommodation in Hyderabad and start your trip the other day to make it a perfect day!

Unlike many other places on earth, it is quite intriguingly fascinating to visit a historically popular place and as past, that is nerve wrenching. So, while you are at Golconda Fort, don’t just roam around and click pictures, try to live the history of the place, and relish the proudest moments of your life.
