History
Lonavala was a part of the Yavada dynasty. Later Mughals kept the region for a long time. The forts in the region and the “Mavla” warriors played an important role in the history of Marathas and Peshwas. Nowadays Rajmachi Fort, Lohagad Fort and Korigad Fort is center of attraction for many travelers. At that time when Lord Elphinstone was the Governor of Bombay Presidency discovered, Lonavala and Khandala hill-station in 1871.
The hill station is spread over an approximate area of 38 square km and exalted about 2,047 ft above sea level and delimited the Deccan Plateau and the Konkan coast in the Sahyadri ranges. A trip to Lonavala and Khandala can be combined with sight-seeing visits of Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa caves and also the two fortresses, Lohagad and Visapur. Another place of interest is the Tungi fort, one of the forts captured by Malik Ahmad near the village of Karjat and was known for its natural strength.

Ways to reach Lonavala
By Airways:
Lonavala does not have any airport but the Indian Air Force station is situated on the way to Aamby Valley city and it has its own private airport. The closest airports are Pune International Airport which is around 64 km away and at a distance of 104 km, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is present. You can reach there by your means from your location.
By Railways:
There are various trains that are connected to Lonavala. At interval of every two hours local trains runs from Pune. Few Trains are originating from Mumbai central line having their last station at Khapoli, from there you have to take bus for the next 15 km to reach at Lonavala. Around 2.5 hrs from Mumbai central and 1 hr approx from Pune for reaching Lonavala. Every train takes halt at Lonavala between Mumbai and Pune.
By Roadways:
If you a local area person you can easily drive to the hill station by your mode of transportation as Lonavala is on Mumbai-Pune express highway which is connected to various towns like Khopoli, Karjat, Telegaon etc.
