About the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin

Haghpat and Sanahin are known to be the first UNESCO heritage site of Armenia built between the 10th and 13th centuries. The place Armenia is said to be the first Christian nation as well. And that makes it a place with several elegant monasteries and churches from centuries back. The place is renowned for scholastic learning and architectural explorations.

Naming in the list of World UNESCO Heritage Site

There are quite many reasons why the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin are named on the list of World Heritage sites. The place nearly represents an amalgamation of Byzantine and vernacular architecture. The oldest structure or the building of the place pays backs almost from the 10th century. There are surplus numbers of Khachkars in the Haghpat valley. The Khachkars are cross-stones found only in some specific places and areas in Haghpat. However, the place Haghpat and Sanahin came in together in the year 2000 and since then it was named under the World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The history of the World UNSECO Heritage Site of Haghpat and Sanahin started almost from the year 970. The place has some very old and extraordinary architecture that composes of churches, monasteries, cathedrals and bell towers. And the entire place is surrounded by a fortress. The place is mainly for those who are in love with art and architecture.
Speaking about Sanahin the date of formation of the place is still unknown. However, rumors are in the air that it was first founded way back in the 4th century. As many remain, ruins and architecture mark the presence of being old.

How to reach and travel across Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin

Sanahin and Haghpat of Armenia are located near Yerevan which makes 3.5 hours of Journey by road. Hence, it is relatable easy for the tourist to reach the place without any hustle. Mostly a day’s trip is more than enough to go around the place and enjoy the landscapes. While a trip to Haghpat, tourists also visit Tbilisi which can be covered in a day’s long trip. However, those who have visited Armenia earlier would recommend not rushing through the trip. Instead, take your time to explore the extraordinary beauty of the place. Also, on your way back to visit the monastery, you can stay halt at Vanadzor, one of the largest cities in Armenia. There you can purchase some amazing souvenirs to take home.

The best and easy mode of transport is the bus; it is also one of the most used modes of transportation by the tourists who come to visit the place. Minibusses are available to travel from Yerevan to Haghpat promptly which covers a distance of almost 160 kilometers. Also while traveling by bus tourists should be aware that there is no direct route to the two cities and hence there will be a break in between to Kilikia to pick up the next bus to Haghpat.
However, the other option is that tourist can also hire a cab to go around a hustle free trip and explore the place on your own phase. Renting a car would ensure time management and more quality time exploring the city. when you hire a cab you can also visit the nearby places like Lori Fortress and Akhtala on the way.

First thing first there is no such thing as an entry fee to explore the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin. If you’re willing to donate some amount you are most welcome. Also, there is a wheelchair facility for those who need it; however, some places would have restrictions for the same.
Also, one fact that you need to keep in mind is that there is no E-money facility in that area, hence you need to keep cash purchase anything or visit any eateries.
For tourists visiting the place for the first, you need to be a bit more assertive while going around the city. It is a good option to go for a private tour. They are professionals who will help you tour the city in the best possible way with less hustle-bustle.
