Kaziranga National Park is present in the heart of Assam and on the bank of Brahmputra river. This place is one of the world heritage sites of UNESCO. People who think that rhinoceros only existed in Jurassic time, then a trip to Kaziranga National Park is a must for them. One of the most sought after wildlife safari destinations in India. This National Park has 430 square km area sprinkled with elephant-grass meadows, Swampy Lagoons. Highly dense forests are the shelter for more than 2200 Indian one-horned Rhinoceros, approx 2/3rd of their total world population.

Wildlife at Kaziranga National Park

Alongside the famous one-horned rhinoceros, the park is the reproducing ground of Elephants, wild water Bison and Bog Deer. After some time, the Tiger populace has additionally expanded in Kaziranga and that is the only reason behind why Kaziranga was announced as Tiger Reserve in 2006.

The park is regarded as an important bird area by BirdLife International for the preservation of Avifaunal species. Fowls like lesser white-fronted Goose, Ferruginous Duck, Baer’s pochard Duck and smaller assistant, more prominent auxiliary, dark necked Stork and Asian Openbill Stork uniquely move from Central Asia throughout the winter season.

Flora & Fauna at Kaziranga National Park

Flora: The National Park is encircled by the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river that helps in the nourishment of the significant plants, animals and bird species of this region. Therefore, it has been titled as a “Hotspot of Biodiversity” in India because of its rich and diverse species.

Due to the distinction in elevation between the eastern and western areas of the park, here one can see four kinds of vegetations like alluvial inundated grasslands, alluvial savanna woodlands, tropical sodden blended deciduous timberlands and tropical semi-evergreen backwoods.

Fauna: Different creatures that can be found in the elephant grass, marshland and thick tropical wet broadleaf timberlands of Kaziranga are Hoolock Gibbon, Tiger, Leopard, Indian Elephant, Sloth Bear, Wild water Bison, Swamp Deer and so on. With an expansion in the Tiger populace consistently, the administration experts announced Kaziranga as a Tiger Reserve in the year 2006.

Safari at Kaziranga National Park

For promoting wildlife tourism in Assam, this National Park authorities have organised a Jeep and Elephant safari tour.

Elephant Safari: An Elephant ride through the wilderness of Kaziranga National Park will give you a superior perspective on Rhinos and other natural life. The Elephant safari is sorted out by the Forest Department twice a day. The Elephant safari permits just four sightseers and at once.

  • Morning- 05:30 – 06:30pm
  • Evening- 06:30 – 07:30pm

Jeep Safari: The forest department arranges two shifts of jeep safari for its visitors. The jeep is allowed to carry six persons at a time.

  • Morning Jeep Safari: 8:00-10:00 am
  • Afternoon Jeep Safari: 02:00-04:00 pm

Best Time to Visit

November to April is the best time for tourists to visit Kaziranga National Park. Kaziranga Park remains closed from 01 May till 31 Oct every year for the visitors.

Summer (April to May): The climate remains dry and windy during the summer, one can find animals around the water bodies.

Monsoon (June to September): The park remains closed from May to October due to warnings of Brahmaputra river floods.

Winter (November to February): Chances of spotting rhinos are more in winter as the grass burn off and the background becomes more evident.

How to Reach Kaziranga National Park

By Air: The nearest airport terminal to Kaziranga National Park is at a distance of 96 km in Jorhat. Guwahati (225km) is another nearest airport to this park.

By Train: The nearest railhead to Kaziranga is 80 km away from Furkating on the east. It is connected by trains to all the major cities of the world and the country.

By Road: Kaziranga is connected with the major cities of the world and within the country through roadways by NH 37. Several public and private buses run on the roads.
